Welcome to

Imagine; there is something near you in the dark.
Something dead.
Something shrunken to bone and leather and rags, yet still animated by a single, burning desire; the desire to hurt YOU.

This is the world, and these the ghosts, of Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936)a brilliant scholar, who is generally considered to be the best - that is to say, the scariest - writer of supernatural fiction that England has ever produced.

Originally read by candlelight, to a small group of friends, on successive Christmas Eves in King's College, Cambridge, these tales proved so successful with the wider public that they have never since been out of print.

This small selection of stories is offered, as a introduction, to to those still unfamiliar with the tales of "Monty' James - a writer whose works, (to quote Ruth Rendell) "One wishes one had not read, in order to have the pleasure of reading them again".

All fictional material on this site is reproduced by kind permission of Nick James and the James Estate
